Ganesh, the son of Shiva, is the remover of obstacles. The bowl of sweets he holds symbolizes the sweetness of liberation. The noose represents drawing close those we love, and reaching out encircle and save any who have strayed from righteousness. His thunderbolt signifies the power of mind over matter, and spirit over mind. The goad moves dullards ahead in the way they best understand, pushing them on their karmic path if they delay or linger. When I painted Ganesh, I wanted to bring out the soft, loving quality in his eyes. For me, Ganesh removes the harshness of dealing with any obstacles I encounter.
